Library #5 Special Library

Library #5 Special Library- The County Law Library at the Berks County Court House

http://www.co.berks.pa.us/Dept/Courts/LawLib/Pages.aspx

For my special library visit, I visited a friend of a former employer at the Law library at BCC in Reading, PA. This facility is well organized and has a large collection of materials for the law profession. In addition to serving court staff and lawyers in the building, this library also serves as a community resource for people acting in court on their own behalf. While the librarians on staff cannot provide legal advise, they can provide forms to file for several legal matters- including requests for child support, small business, and divorce. The Library also offers access to Lexus-Nexus (an online law database) through three public access computers, any user can get a card allowing them to use print materials and create a username to use the online resources, while the library is not involved in too many social media programs the librarians do have online tutorials for users in order to best utilize resources. The personal mission of the library is to provide the best and most recent materials to the courthouse employees (including district attorneys employees, judges, and lawyers.) The majority of the users of the library are lawyers and people in the community, there is a wealth of information available in-house such as- court documents, national and state laws and regulations, and US, State, and Regional Reporters.  There are two full-time librarians on staff, a head librarian, and an assistant librarian. The librarians are very knowledgeable and helpful to all users of the library, which receives a steady stream of patrons through-out the day.

Library #4 Government Documents Depository

Government Documents Depository- Tampa-Hillsborough County Government Document Depository.

http://www.hcplc.org/

The government documents collection is located at the John F. German Public Library in downtown Tampa. The collection is currently being shifted to house more federal documents. I spoke with Janet Bergeron, the coordinator of the government documents collection, Ms. Bergeron has her MLS and has worked with the state documents for over five years just recently her job responsibilities were increased when federal documents were included. This specific collection does not have a mission statement separate from the Hillsborough public library system, nut the mission of the collection is to preserve federal, state, and local documents and give patrons the ability to utilize these materials. Two people, Ms. Bergeron and Juliet Douglass, staff the collection. The majority of people using these collections of documents according to Ms. Bergeron are local university students; in addition to students there are many people who are interested in the agricultural documents. Ms. Bergeron talked about the assistance that they provide in regards to online resources, while the collection is mostly available online; there are several documents in the state collection that are in-house use only. Since there are no issues with theft of these materials, the government documents are shelved in open stacks.  The collection is being reorganized to provide easier access to patrons and also make shelving material easier for staff.

Library #3

Library Three- Community College

Harrisburg Area Community College http://www.hacc.edu/

I recently made a trip back north and had the opportunity to visit the new campus of the community college I had attended after highschool. The mission: "Harrisburg Area Community College is an accessible, affordable, high quality, comprehensive community college. The multi-campus college serves as a premier educational and workforce development institution. The presence of quality instruction and cutting edge technology, business and industry collaboration, and a learner-centered environment provides students the necessary knowledge skills and values to compete and excel in a global community." The library reflects this and sets an example by keeping abroad with current technologies and providing students with the best resources, while the collection was small it was adaquate for the campus size and there was a large collection of laptops that students can use on campus and ones that you can sign out. The library is mostly used by students and faculty as a quite space from the louder common areas, community members are welcome to view materials but student ID cards are required to check out items. Through the website students can access electronic reserves, databases,  and online journals.

Library #2

Library Two: Academic University Library

1.     Academic Library- University of Tampa http://www.ut.edu/library

I interviewed Marlyn Pethe the director of the Macdonald-Kelce Library at the University of Tampa. While there was not a mission statement for the library the universities mission is “The University is committed to the development of each student to become a productive and responsible citizen. To this end, the University ensures that students balance “learning by thinking” with “learning by doing.” Students are taught by highly qualified, experienced faculty members who are committed to teaching, academic advising and continued intellectual growth. Classes are conducted in personalized settings in which learning is enhanced through application. Students participate in learning partnerships with faculty and the community through independent studies, internships, re-search, and other practical experiences that complement classroom learning. The University’s academic services and co-curricular activities support individual discovery and development and provide leadership opportunities. Involvement and participation inside and outside the classroom are valued. Through complete engagement with the educational environment, UT students are prepared for careers, graduate and professional education, and lifelong learning.” In regards to the library, Mrs. Pethe stated that the main mission of the library and the responsibility of the faculty and staff is to best provide the necessary information to users. Mrs. Pethe has been with the University for over 30 years and holds a MLS. Students mostly utilize the facility, but there are also services available to members of the community. In addition to being the campus library, the facility also serves as a government depository, which the public can access most items, which are for in-house use only. The library also has a close relationship with a language academy, providing materials to students from other countries. While most of the technology provided is for student use, the library has one public access use computer for members of the community. Students can access the libraries catalog, databases, and eBooks from off campus using a username and password. This library seems to have more then enough staff to best provide services to students, there are eight full-time librarians who hold MLS degrees, around 4 part-time library technicians, and around twenty-five student workers. The library utilizes social media to best serve the needs of their patrons; the library publishes two Blogs- one called Finding Utopia (the online public catalog) and Business Utopia (discussing resources for business majors.) There are also several staff members who are active on Twitter; Mrs. Pethe stated that they were mostly directed towards library promotion, but also at catalog and research help. While the library does not use Facebook for the common promotional aspects, they use the site for staff and student workers to trade shifts, post days they need off, and schedule hours. When discussing the increased use of social media, Mrs. Pethe said that the student workers have been the greatest influence on the libraries use of these tools. Student workers are encouraged to share emerging social media and remain active in changing trends in communication. The library is very devoted to providing the best services possible and it is shown by the cooperation between students and staff. The university has a program where the graduating class chooses what area of the university receives extra funding, this year the library was chosen. Due to student requests to access the student newspapers past and present online, Mrs. Pethe wrote a proposal to the senior class asking for funds to digitize student newspapers and possibly the yearbooks as well.

Researching Libraries

Task: Observe presence and delivery of information. Create an online journal that compares, contrasts, and reflect.

Library 1

Public Library- Charles J. Fendig Public Library http://www.hcplc.org/hcplc/locations/fen/

The mission statement of the library is as follows “The Cooperative promotes lifelong learning, an informed citizenry, individual intellectual freedom, enhanced quality of life, and broadened horizons for all residents of Hillsborough County through a network of free libraries with open access, a community focus, welcoming environments, a broad range of relevant materials in a variety of formats, and highly qualified, customer-focused employees.” Upon observing the branch, I noted that a majority of the patrons were mostly utilizing the computer terminals. There were around 12 public access computers, and a majority of the patrons were adults. When talking to the librarian on duty, he said that the typical clientle of the library is adult community members and some parents and young children. Fendig library employees around six full time librarians, with a part-time staff, and several volunteers. The branch does not have a website, but shares the main Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative site with other branches. Users can access the systems holdings through http://www.hcplc.org/, the can also renew materials, check on account information, place holds, and chat with a librarian. The library also holds classes for adults, teens, children, and families which reflects the mission by promoting lifelong learning.
